Last Match

Many years ago, a TV show (Twilight Zone? Alfred Hitchcock? Outer Limits?)
had an episode in which a man in prison in the Old West concocted a plan to
escape by colluding with the fellow who made the caskets. Seems the graveyard
was outside the prison. The plan was that the next time someone died, our "hero"
would climb into the casket and lay next to the corpse. In the morning, the
coffin would be nailed shut and transported to the graveyard for burial.
Then, according to plan, the casket maker would show up ten minutes later
and dig up the grave, and the two would share the loot from a bank robbery
committed by our hero.

So,someone dies, and our hero climbs into the basket. Sure enough, next morning
he hears them nailing the coffin shut. He can feel the thing being loaded onto a
wagon, and he can tell when he's being lowered into the grave. He hears the
dirt being shoveled on top. Now all he has to do is wait...and wait..and wait.

Getting impatient, he lights matches and glances at his watch. Surely his
co-conspirator will be here soon! He's running of air. He's starting to panic.
He lights his LAST MATCH, and then rolls over to look at the corpse laying next
to him -- only to discover the body is that of the coffin maker -- the only person
who knows he's here!

And with that, as the match flickers out, our hero realizes he's just been buried
alive. This SP is my tribute to that story, and I tried to come up with the look
I remember on his face, those many years ago.

PS: Anyone who can tell me which show (Twilight Zone, etc.) it was gets my eternal
gratitude!

Nicely claustraphobic for your tale! :)
Only ever caught a few episodes of TZ and OL myself, will ask a couple of more 'avid' friends (read nerds) for you :)

Sorry I can't help you there Gary, I do not watch spooky movies, I watch romances mostly, love the expression though.

LOL .. this SP reminds me of the famous portrait of Salvidor Dali, where I has this same AMAZED, wide eyed look on his face. This is very fun!

Jeez, I'm looking like this just after reading your cap. I also look like this after the Monkey on the Wing ep of TZ. Still makes me shake. Thanks for the memories, I think.

That's a brilliant idea for a story! I am pretty sure it's not Twilight Zone, but I can't identify it. Hey did you just imagine this is in some nightmare??? LOL Great, GREAT, image to go with your tale!!

Great story - I loved the "Twilight Zone" but didn't catch
this particular episode. Your SP _definitely_ illustrates the realization of the
lead character!

Stange the image won't load on my computer, just the thumb. Weird, I think I've entered the Twilight zone.

Wonderful SP. I don't remember that episode and you gave me the creeps telling that story.
