800,000 acres encompass two desert ecosystems, the Colorado Desert in the southern and eastern parts of the park with lower elevation, characterized by tall ocotillo plants and cholla cactus; the higher elevation Mojave Desert located north west with Joshua Tree. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park
