Devils Tower NM is abot 110 miles northwest of Rapid City, SD and about 20 miles north of Interstate 90. The rock tower rises 1267 feet about the nearby Belle Fourche River.
Indian lore varies somewhat as too it origin, but generally agrees it saved children from bears who wanted to eat them. According to the legends, the bears claw marks made the vertical grooves or flutes in the rock.
Today the "tower" is a favorite location for rock climbers using the free method. Free climbing is a specific rock climbing term that refers to climbs in which climbers do not employ climbing protection such as ropes and other climbing equipment to aid in ascending the climb.
