Texas-El Paso & Junction

After New Mexico comes Texas, when driving east on I-10. If you travel the breath of Texas, on I-10, you will have traveled about 880 miles.
This section is divided into two sections; El Paso and Junction.

EL Paso
Our plan was to camp on the west side of El Paso at the Franklin Mountains SP. We suspected it was going to be a bit difficult getting to the CG when the road to the CG was on a by-pass route around El Paso, with traffic close together doing about 60mph, and was under construction. Needless to say it was not the best part of the day. The lanes were very narrow, with a concrete barrier at the edge of the travel lane. It wasn’t long before we heard a rather loud noise from the camper. At the top of the hill, we pulled over at an overlook and checked the trailer. The trailer was minus the awning supports and was hanging by the canvas. The pieces were somewhere back on the hill. Because the traffic was heavy and fast we drove about 10 miles away from the CG, made a U turn and headed back the way we came because the CG was on the other side of the road. We found the exit for the CG, pulled into it and found the gate was locked. The CG stated if we arrived after 5pm we could enter using the combination to the locks they gave us. It is now after 6pm and the combination would not work. We then decided to drive to the other side (east) of El Paso and get a motel room. At around 7:30pm we got a motel room and the first day of our cross-country trip ended. We only had 2700 miles to go.

Junction
Junction is located at milepost 456 along I-10, at the junction of US Highways 377 and 83. There are two better in this area, one private and one state park. We stayed at the private CG because the SP was full. This area is a convenient stop when traveling east on I-10, about 450 miles from El Paso. Also, there are two very good smokehouses in the village, Cooper’s and Lum’s. Both have excellent smoked meat, including brisket, ribs and sausage.
The North Llano River RV Park is the final resting place of the remains of our awning. The campground graciously agreed to put the rest of our awning in the “awning section” of his recyclable area.
