2008 September UT Monumental Valley TP

Monument Valley (MV) lies entirely within the boundary of the Navajo Nation, partly in Utah and partly in Arizona. That is why it is a Tribal Park. MV lies approximately 175 miles northeast of Flagstaff, AZ.

The first view, north of Kayenta, AZ along route 163, is of one or two individual large pinnacles or spirelike rock formation. But as you get closer to the Park, you can see more and more of these "individual" formations, stretching beyond the horizon.

And after entering the Park, a 17 miles road takes you on a tour of these formations, looking at them from the ground up. Many of the free standingformations have names, such as; West Mitten Butte, Elephant Butte, Three Sisters, Spearhead Mesa, totam Pole and Yei Bi Chei. Many of the formations are more than 500 feet above the car.

I am unable to make a picture with my words, this "wonder" should be enjoyed with all of your personal senses.
