It a remote area of the Gila National Forest in western New Mexico are the Gila Cliff Dwellings. More than seven hundred years ago, the "Mogollon" (mug-ee-yone) people sought refuge from marauding enemies and the elements. They built forty rooms within five spacious sandstone cliff caves. The ruins were designated as a national monument on November 16, 1907.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings NM is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Silver City, New Mexico
