Cancun is in the northeast corner of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, at the northern end of the Mayan Riviera. It is an important tourist destination on the Caribbean Sea. One Mayan name for Cancun meant “Place of Snakes”. There are two well known ruins near Cancun, Coba and Tulum. We did not visit Coba. Tulum will be discussed in the gallery marked Ruins.

We flew into Cancun and stayed two nights at a small hotel, the Mia Cancun and the third night at an all inclusive resort, Secret’s Playa Mujeres. This last night was arranged by my daughter Cathy and her friend Dennis, who works for the company who manages the resort. The night’s stay, the daytime celebration and the Saturday night dinner were done in a grand manner, in celebration of my 80th birthday. Cathy and Dennis used to work together in the hotel management industry. While staying in Cancun, we visited the small quaint fishing village of Puerto Morelos and the Tulum ruin. Puerto Morelos, in preparation of the upcoming Easter weekend, was putting the finishing touches on a large group of sand sculptures. The sculptures were very detailed.
