As we traveled south, we visited the Mapara Forest Reserve and a Sanctuary at Pureora near Te Kuiti looking for Kokako(a very endangered type of wattlebird), New Zealand Falcon, Long-tailed Cuckoo, Yellow-crowned Parakeet, and the North Island forms of Kaka,(a Parrot), New Zealand Robin, and Tomtit. Our final day on the North Island was spent searching for the rare and endangered Blue Duck, which we were lucky to find and photograph. We also found the enormous carrot of Ohakune and a lot of beautiful scenery. |
