Two good books on life in the old time Arctic.
Some others... "Coming Into The Country" by John McPhee
"The Last of the Bush Pilots" by Harmon Helmricks
I lived above the Arctic Circle, in Alaska, for five years. As a pilot I flew airplanes and helicopters over most of Alaska transporting some of the most unique cargo and passengers imaginable. What an interesting life it was. These books I happened to see as I was passing by my bookshelves this evening and for some reason I began to reminisce. Actually "Coming Into The Country" (not pictured here)is my favorite Alaskan book, but "Last of the Bush Pilots" (again, not pictured) is a cool micro history of bush flying in Alaska.
"Fifty Years Below Zero" was written by Charles Brower an early whaling captain and explorer who lived in Barrow Alaska. I lived in Barrow for two years and actually worked for his son, Tom Brower, who was probably about 70 years old when knew him and he owned Cape Smythe Air Service http://www.capesmythe.com/ . Cape Smythe was just purchased by Frontier Air. A much different outfit today than when I flew for it almost 25 years ago, now. Lots of memories.
Anyway, these two books I noticed on the self tonight brought back memories. And they are good books to read.
