We traveled a small area from Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich, Rothenberg Germany, Nurnberg, and Salzberg Austria. All of these places were great, but for me a high point was in the town of Sigmaringen Germany. There they have the Hohenzollern Palace (Schloss Hohenzollern) which I highly recommend. Most castles are big empty fortresses, but the Schloss Hohenzollern tour has an immense collection of furnised living quarters, dining areas, state rooms, studies, art, hunting trophies, and a arsenal (second to none). My wife loved Rothenberg which is a small walled city on the Tauber River dating to the 11th century. The buildings have been beautifully maintained.
