Cinnamon Bear Cub charging.jpg
This small cinnamon colored black bear cub was an unwelcome visitor to Adams Lodge in June 2006. He'd learned to find food in dumpsters the previous summer when he was with his mom and two siblings. He showed up at the lodge, alone, hungry and unafraid of people. He would come to sound of Kate and I talking and appear to expect food from us. We suspect a neighbor had been feeding him. We tried to run him off with noise, gunshots, electic fences, shouting, rubber bullets and we kept all food out of his reach, but he kept coming back. He'd try to get in the back door, he would bluff charge at me, he would get into cars and he didn't seem to know how to forage like a wild bear. He was about 80 pounds and in poor condition. The lady who was feeding him did not do him any favors.

Black Bear Cubs in Spruce Tree
At Adams Lodge a mama black bear and her three cubs visited us one night. We tried to discourage them and only succeeded in having them go up a large Engleman Spruce tree near the back door. They stayed in the tree all the following day and left after dark.

Mama Bear
Very calm and patient. She nursed the cubs off and on all day. The comfort sounds the cubs make while they are nursing is really interesting, a very loud purring, sounds like a helicopter.

Big Black Bear
Kate and I saw this large bear up South Fork. It was quite a distance from us. The photo was taken using a 600mm lens with stacked extenders, a 2X and a 1.4X in low light with manual focusing so the quality is not good. We were still excited to see the bear and enjoyed watching it until dark. We were far enough away that it wasn't bothered by us and continued to graze. We were surprised to see it so fat this early in the spring.

Bear at the Lodge
This medium sized bear was in the tree by the back door when this photo was taken. This was our first bear photo. Poor quality as it was taken with a P&S camera in the middle of the night.
