| After a 3 hour wait in immigration, I agreed with the puzzled American behind me who said he was baffled by the knowledge that at one time, the Brits ruled the largest empire the world has seen, and now couldn't run a piss up in a brewery. I didn't comment to him about a set of basically useless politicians, who had run the country since 1918, with the exceptions of Churchill, and Thatcher, the over respect for old methods, and the venal press. Then in Dorchester, Dorset, where we drove, which at one time was approached from the West down an avenue of trees, is now thanks to Prince Dumbo Charles, is approached through a set of uninspired business buildings. And why they put up with no air conditioning in the hotel rooms, and useless Wi-Fi still baffles me. Most hotels would make Days Inn seem like palaces. That said, everyone was very, no, exceptionally friendly and helpful, and having now seen my nieces and nephew's children, grow and set off on careers of their own, I remain hopeful. |
