The monastery was founded in the sixth century and occupied for 1000 years. As well as the round tower, part crosses, grave slabs and church remains traces of small industries were found surrounding the monastic settlement. The island is largely undisturbed and was excavated in the 1970s. There are still some local burials on the island but they are not as obvious as in other monastic settlements.
