Thursday (Jan 5 2006) I was driving north towards Fort Sam and saw thick black smoke just starting, about a mile ahead. I stopped at the red light on E Houston along with a few other cars, leaving room for the firetrucks etc. The first response fire dept vehicle came up behind us and went thru the intersection. As I grabbed a camera and snapped a couple shots thru the windshield I noticed two men riding horses on the sidewalk in front of the Jack-in-the-Box, to the right. The fire was coming from a yard behind the Texaco station (with a wood fence, wood garage and whatever else). I stopped on the side streets just south of it and then north of it for a minute or two and watched the main fire trucks arrive...then moved on and got out the way. The fire was doused within minutes. Later I checked the news outlets but couldn't find any reports that described what happened. There was a huge wildfire north of town the same day that got a lot of publicity. I drove by a few days later and saw some men moving away the ruined material. As for the horsemen, my first (& only) speculation was maybe they're with the Buffalo Soldiers, in training and getting ready for next week's MLK celebration trek thru that part out town?
