Roma girl in Dushanbe Tajikistan. She is 14 years old, and is wearing a yellow dress and has a black hijab (headscarf). Roma (gypsy) people in Central Asia are a subgroup of the Dom people, who likely emigrated from Multan, Pakistan many centuries ago. Locally they are known as Lyulis, Lulis or Jughis, but it appears they prefer the term Mugat (also spelled Mughat). For many Tajiks, unfortunately Romas are probably the most disliked of all social groups. Although they constitute a tiny percentage of Tajikistan’s population, they are highly visible because they beg. Photo taken on August 15, 2012.
