Multnomah Falls, Oregon May 2002 & March 2004

New Page 1

Multnomah Falls is located near Troutdale on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge. Plummeting 620 feet from its origins on Larch Mountain, Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. The complementing architecture around the falls, Benson Bridge and Multnomah Falls Lodge is one of the many features that makes this waterfall special. Benson Bridge, crafted by Italian stone masons, allows visitors to cross the falls between its lower and upper cataracts. In 1914, Simon Benson, a prominent businessman and owner of the falls at that time, erected the bridge. Before then, a log bridge was in its place. Benson gave the 300 acre site to the City of Portland. In 1943, final ownership of the site and lodge was transferred to the USDA Forest Service. The Lodge was built in 1925 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It had dormitories and four rooms for overnight stays. Every type of rock found in the Columbia River Gorge is represented in the Lodge.

The images on the left were taken on a trip north in May, 2002 and the images on the right where taken while passing through the Columbia River Gorge on the way to central Washington on March 19, 2004. The intense green in the May 2002 images were due to the advent of spring while the images from March 2004 still show winter's loosening grip with the trees just starting to bud.

The two sunrise shots where taken on Highway 5 on the way up to Portland as a vibrantly colored dawn broke through the low hanging mist. It was a magical moment to witness.
