Dune-14

Death Valley National Park, California

What makes this image is the contrast of the smooth dunes against the rough hard pan in the low spots.

I struggled with this image...
At first I was disturbed that the hard dried mud was a distraction; something that did not belong in a classic sand dune shot.
Over time I've come to appreciate that the patches of dried mud and the mesquite are in fact what makes this place so unique and special.
So now I have a hard time thinking of the dunes without these special elements and consider this one of my more successful images of the place,
in spite of the fact that it took me a year to finally come to terms with it and finally publish it here. ;~)

masterful....the layers in the middle distance give it a magical surreal look that can't be described....v

Very nice! If Ansel were alive today, I think he would be jealous of the ease of digital cameras, however, it still takes the eye, eh?

This is my favorite in this gallery. Really nice! I was there in Mar. 2006 but did not get a chance to stop by the sand dunes.
