Of the original 85 temples, only 25 remain. The temples were built between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Chandela dynasty. After the decline of the Chandelas in the 13th century, the temples were abandoned and lay hidden in a dense forest for 700 years. Rediscovered in 1838 by a British Bengal Engineer, they were excavated and are still undergoing restoration. The temples are most famous for their many erotic sculptures. Over 800 sculptures cover the Kandariya Mahadev Temple, also known as the Kama Sutra Temple.
