This is the original, small-sized sample photo,completely untouched by me. What I see here is a good handling of the highlights, but with unnaturally low contrast in the shadow areas. As a JPEG Capture of a high-contrast scene, this image file has a very safe,low-contrast look, but it's nowhere near ready for use. I decided to boost the contrast,but not touch the Tone Curve at all by using a really simple trick: I applied Unsharp Mask at 10%, 150 pixel radius, 0 threshold, three times in a row. The next photo shows the result of that type of contrast enhancement,and the final image looks pretty good considering what I had to work from.
