The kid was ruled safe at first base. Which as this photo shows, was the correct call. Shooting from very close range with the 300 stopped down 2/3 of an f/stop from wide open gives JUST enough depth of field for this type of play from this distance. Running the camera at -2/3 stop builds shutter speed. FOr shooting hand-held with the big 300 or the 400mm, I prefer to keep the speed at 1/5000 second or even faster,since acquiring base runners often involves swinging the camera or moving the camera in a sort of "snapshooting" movement,where the camera's simply NOT all that steady,but is actually moving,and the best insurance against shake/overaccelerated camera movement is sheer speed,speed,speed. 1/5000 is nice and pretty safe.
