As these paint horses roared by me, I brought the camera up,focused by hand as fast as I could, and tripped off three shots as fast as the D1 could fire. Of the three, this shot, the second one, was the one I liked the most. Paint horses are very beautiful when they run. I actually prefer to use the 180 AF Nikkor lenses in MANUAL focus simply because if the AF system goes on a hunt, you can blow the shot. The AF system of the 180 Nikkor lenses has never been all that spectacular, and even with the D1's excellent focus module, it's just as fast to focus by hand as it is with AF,and by leaving the lens in M focus mode you never risk losing a shot while the camera attempts to correct from a focus hunt problem in AF mode. This one photo literally "sold" this particular mare to a buyer three states away!
