Another item from my late father in law's collection of engravings,
this one dating from 1795.
I assumed this to be a portrait of an old Portuguese or Spanish
explorer but have since learned it's a Scotsman - William Alexander,
1st Earl of Stirling, who colonised both Nova Scotia and Long Island in the 1600s.
How did I find this out? Because an identical piece of artwork hangs in
the Scottish National Portrait Gallery!
