Plague

Leith, Edinburgh

This gravestone simply marked 'A.A. 1656' marks the burial site
of Alexander Abercrombie whose job it was to fumigate (with burning heather)
the homes of Bubonic Plague victims during the Leith outbreak of 1645.
Although 2,736 people died over a period of 6 months, Alexander somehow
survived despite being in close proximity to the disease.
The outbreak ended when the worst rain storms for many years
cleared the epidemic out of the town.

Wow, that is some grave stone, don't think I would want his job neither. V
