Hailes Castle contains some of the oldest standing stonework
in Scotland with parts of it dating back to the year 1240.
In the mid 1500's it was the home of James Hepburn, the 4th Earl of Bothwell
and husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
It was largely destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650.
