The word 'Jougs' isn't one I was familiar with until I came across
this old neck manacle outside a church in Perthshire.
These iron collars, or 'jougs', were placed around a wrongdoer's neck and
fastened by a padlock. They were used for both ecclesiastical and civil offences
and were intended to shame offenders publicly. Presumably not used very often in recent years?
