The last thing I expected to find today in the shadow of
Edinburgh Castle was the grave of an American Civil War soldier.
This Confederate flag marks the grave of Scots born 1st Lieutenant
William Alexander Aitchison of the 59th Virginia Infantry
Regiment who died in Virginia on 25th January 1865 aged 30.
He would be upset to learn that a statue of Abraham Lincoln stands
less than a mile away from him at the opposite end of Princes Street.
