'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin Dies at 44

BRISBANE, Australia -- Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.
Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

I'm not really surprised about the popularity of this gallery. Steve Irwin deserves all the praise for the hard work most all his life. So pleased you and others enjoy this living memorial. A beautiful memorial, I thank you! It's easy when dealing with someone that had a beautiful soul! He'll never be forgotten. Makes me wonder about people with a sense of humor. I've said this before and am so glad for the technical world of reruns. In reality it's a one shot existence. With technology, we can see him everyday if we chose. Yes it's a good life. Harley dude, you are welcome. Steve Irwin will forever be a hero to me. I'm so glad his work still shown on TV. We even get to see him occassionally and pretend he's still here. This man was unique. I pray for the comfort of the of God to comfort the beautiful family this great man left behind. He was a man of passion, a man of vision, and someone who didn't wait for someone else to pick up the torch, but ran with it himself. If I could have only 10% of the passion and desire he had, I would of accomplished all my dreams 10 times over again. I will never forget the "crocodile hinter"! I look forward to watch his children pick up his legacy and run with it, with the same unlimited% of passion and desire he had for his cause of animal conservation. R, I very much appreciate what you had to say and thank you. It's all about a national hero, we needed one and now he's gone. Makes you wonder who or what will the world pick up on now. Maybe we all need to take a good look at our own life and make sure we are not taking something , someone for granted. Interesting thought huh?

AN EULOGY TO STEVE IRWIN Fearless he came, he saw, he teased All crocodiles, snakes and chimpanzees. We admired, laughed and fears eased. He showed his love of the wild, And treated all danger as mild. A showman to woman and child, He taught us so much about nature with an infectious delighted flavour, We saw and delighted too, In animals now rare and few. Giant rays that we will always remember, Steve was filming one day in September. He loved, he swam, he approached, But the domain of the ray he encroached As casually as a walk in the park, and the big ray just pierced his heart.
