Irwin plans fight against croc reserve mining
Terri Irwin is to fight plans to mine inside the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on the Cape York Peninsular of Queensland.
Ms Irwin, who's husband Steve died in 2006, says that Queensland company Cape Alumina wants to mine about 50 million tonnes of bauxite from over a tenth of the reserve's land.
The Government donated the land to become a Reserve in memory of Steve Irwin.
Cape Alumina has lodged an application to remove millions of tonnes from the reserve, however Ms Irwin says this will destroy plant and wildlife systems.
"We have found a number of plant species which are very vulnerable, but the surprising thing is, there've been some four plant species which have never been recorded on western Cape York," she said.
Ms Irwin said that she believed a resolution could be found with Cape Alumina.
"Setting aside this land will not break the bank for Cape Alumina, and yet it would make such a huge difference environmentally," she said.
"We're going to plead our case and I can't imagine the situation couldn't be resolved, because it's just kind of a lay-down measure that this particular area needs to be protected."
