Irwin's dad says leave the crocs alone

Thursday, 11/06/2009

The father of the late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin says he's disgusted with a plan to begin crocodile safari hunting in the Top End.

The Northern Territory Government put forward a draft management plan earlier this year, which would allow the hunting of 25 saltwater crocodiles each year.

But Bob Irwin says educating people about the danger of crocodiles would be far more effective than a mass cull.

"If you start to have people shooting things like crocodiles, we're going to have crocodiles with bullets in them that are going to die a terrible, slow death,' he says.

"I could just never agree to it, ever."
