Bindi's Birthday Bummer?

The Crocodile Hunter's daughter turned 10 years old yesterday -- and we're wondering if her cake was a birthday party downer.

We couldn't help but wonder if Bindi's Irwin's birthday cake ruined her special day. How does it feel to cut into your dead father's face and then bite into it? Is this a good way to honor a national hero and wonderful father -- or is it time for Bindi to find an identity other than as Steve Irwin's daughter?

We asked momlogic contributor, Rabbi Sherre Hirsch, for her expert advice:

"I see why they wanted to include the dead father's memory in the celebration," she says. "Probably when they were thinking of the idea, it sounded cute. 'He's gonna be with us in spirit...he's going to be at the party.' But they didn't think it through. The actual image is going to be cut up. It's so impermanent."

Because Steve Irwin was killed so violently, she says the last thing you want to do is cut him again. "It's like desecrating his image and cutting into the dead," she says. "To me, that is a little weird. And eventually, the cake is going to be eaten -- which makes it even more creepy."

Rabbi Sherre says there are other ways to honor his memory in a more permanent way. "They could have given Bindi a gold locket with a picture of her father in it," she concludes. "Same message, but communicated in a totally different way."
