Face-off!, Brentwood Mitigation Area, Brentwood, NH

An Eastern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis sauritus) just inches from a much larger Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). This did not end as you might think (garter snake devouring the much smaller ribbon snake). As I got closer, the garter snake beat a hasty retreat while the ribbon snake remained "frozen". This is a good comparison of the field makings of the two similar looking species side by side.
