The main attractions of the city of St. Andrews are two ruin sites representing two sad stories: one used to be a magnificent castle, and the other one, measuring 119 meter (391 feet) long, was believed to be the largest church ever built in Scotland.
The St Andrews Castle was captured by the English, then retaken by the Scots, and later recaptured and destroyed by the English, and retaken and repaired by the Scots back and forth. Eventually, it was destroyed by the Scots to prevent the English from using it as a stronghold again.
The Cathedral of St Andrews, which had become the centre of the Medieval Catholic Church in Scotland, was destroyed after Catholic mass was outlawed during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century.
