Going by the area and population, Lillehammer is a small town. It became internationally well known because it hosted the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, and the event was a huge success. Even the weather was incredible, for weeks it had been snowing heavily, but just shortly before the Olympics the snow suddenly stopped, and like a miracle there was beautiful blue sky for the following two weeks when the games took place.
