097_Frederick the Great in the street of Berlin.jpg

The statue of the goddess Victoria in the last photo, and this multi-tier sculpture, were erected by Frederick William III, the son of Frederick the Great's successor.
He commissioned the same sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch to create this group sculpture depicting Frederick the Great, intended for public display on the street.
Unveiled in 1851, this work is considered a masterpiece of 19th-century German art.
The multi-tiered pedestal (not showing all tiers here) features bas-reliefs depicting his military commanders, diplomats, judges, artists, musicians, philosophers, writers, and others.
These 74 eminent figures also reflect the achievements and multifaceted talents of Frederick the Great, who modestly described himself as the "First Servant of Prussia."
During WWII, this statue was hidden under a huge concrete shell built over it.
But, in 1950, it was dismantled by East German authorities who wanted to melt it to reuse the metal.
As a miracle, a minister sabotaged the transport, secretly preserved the pieces, and hid them in Sanssouci Palace Park.
It wasn't until East Germany legitimized its historical heritage in the 1980s, they finally returned the masterwork to its original place of prominence in Berlin.

Amazing history of this beautiful statue Christian Daniel Rauch certainly will be remembered for his talent as a sculpture artist.
Nice that they did not discriminate who would be on the masterpiece sculpture.
