This Golden Gallery was completed in 1747. It was built by King Frederick II, the grandson of King Frederick I.
King Frederick I was the one who expanded the summer residence to a palace and added the dome tower. (reigning from 1688 to 1713).
His grandson ascended the throne as Frederick II in 1740 and almost immediately undertook major expansion work, adding an entirely new wing that housed several large halls.
The Golden Gallery was heavily damaged during World War II. It was meticulously reconstructed using surviving archival photos, mouldings, and documentation.
