The Merlion—a mythical creature featuring the head of a lion and the body of a fish—is the official mascot of Singapore.
The term "Mer" traces its roots to the Latin word *mare* and the Old English word *mere*, signifying that the origins of this cosmopolitan city lie in those of a humble fishing village.
The term "Lion," meanwhile, derives from Sanskrit, evoking the "Lion City."
This creature was originally conceived in 1964 to serve as the logo for the Singapore Tourism Board.
Today, the Merlion proudly embodies courage, strength, and the deep bond Singaporeans share with the sea.
