This colossal stone statue is a guardian lion from the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud; it is currently on display at the British Museum in London.
This stone lion dates back to the reign of King Ashurnasirpal II, specifically between 883 and 859 BC.
The 15-ton statue once guarded, alongside its counterpart, the entrance to the Temple of Ishtar, the Assyrian goddess of war.
