In Chinese imperial architecture, multi-arch stone gates were designed to signify the transition from the mortal world to the sacred, divine realm of the afterlife.
The number of arches (often three or five) reflected the importance and status of the site. Five-arch structures are reserved for the highest-ranking imperial sites.
The Eastern Qing Tombs cover an area of approximately 80 square kilometers (about 31 square miles). It is the largest and best-preserved imperial mausoleum complex in China.
