The name Kariye was adopted during the Ottoman era when the building was converted from a Byzantine church into a mosque.
The transition occurred roughly 50 years after the fall of Constantinople. The Chora Church became Kariye Mosque.
The word "Kariye" is a Turkish derivation of the original Greek name Chora, which translates to "in the country" or "in the fields".
