5/11: 260 Steps

To reach the top of the Arc de Triomphe one must climb 260 dizzying spiral steps. Tim and I sprinted up because we were there just before it closed and wanted to have as much time at the top as possible. He thinks it looks like a nautilus. I think it looks like a person with vertigo's worst nightmare.

One other note: It was very dark and didn't have my tripod, so this is a 2s handheld shot. Under ideal circumstances, it would have been a much longer exposure stopped down to get the full DOF with no shake :)

Away on business so this is another photo from France (though I just finally edited it!)

Some thought on spiral staircase shots for you, Della:

What makes this image work for you is not only its composition, which sucks us down into it and never stops, but also the delicate patterns of light that fall upon it, as if a dusting of snow. You make this massive structure seem so delicate and vulnerable through the play of light you have brought to this image.

Spiral staircases are a metaphor as well, Della -- they speak to me of looking at life from both ends. I am sure you have seen a some of these other spiral staircases here on pbase, but I would link you to them again to show that it is not so much the unique design of the structure itself that makes them fascinating, but rather what the photographer can do with them.

I am sure you have seen this same staircase in Paris shot as a downhill journey by Ruthie Hanson at
http://www.pbase.com/ruthemily/image/43825861

And I have two spiral staircases in my own teaching galleries:

Shooting up at the staircase at the Abbey of Melk in Austria, I was jolted by the sheer energy of color and the force of movement. Its at:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/20828398

And shooting down on the staircase at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, I included a mysterious hand to symbolize a journey that began in light and ends in darkness, at:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/28249603

All four of these spiral staircase shots give us more than just form for its own sake. They all add a dimension of meaning to form by light, color, or human values.

very creative..... 2 seconds! My heart would be racing after the sprinting lol

This is an effective image. I don't think it hurts that it was hand held - you do have a steadier hand than me at 2 seconds :o). The vortex and tone are all wonderful - very visually appealing.

Yep I see Nautilus too (must be a guy thing) :) A steady hand, stunningly beautiful, in great shape (sprinted up them huh?) and a great eye. Another nice one!

A Triomphe! Your photo is as beautiful as a favorite nautilus shell I once had.
