This is a much better comp. I think it show cases the owl much more, the horazontal image had to much dead space. regardless this is an excellent capture and I really like the way the eye shows up int the image...

I'd crop the right side like in the vertical, leave the left where it is in the horizontal, and bring the top down about half way to the top of his head. Beautiful bird and photo.

I like them both, but I think the best would be to crop the right side (from the horizontal) and leave the left, so the owl is in the right of the picture and looking across the frame.
