Looking east at 10,000 foot elevation . You can see the cinder cones in the crater. Temperature at the top is very cool only 50 degrees F. A real shock when driving from sea level which is usually around 80 F.Because of the remarkable clarity, dryness, and stillness of the air, and its location above one-third of the atmosphere, as well as the absence of the lights of major cities, the summit of Haleakala is one of the most sought-after locations in the world for ground-based telescopes.
