Visions of Sugar Plums
One of my favorite eateries--Panera. My favorite pastry is in the bottom right hand corner--orange scones. Very yummy!

Countdown!
This is our family's advent calendar. We have had it for at least 20 years, maybe longer. It was made by Avon, and my mom gave it to us. We have used it every year, and it is a big part of our family tradition. Even when our girls were teenagers and too cool for Christmas decorations, one of them always moved the little mouse to the next pocket every day. This morning Boppaw got to show the little mousie to Eliza, who appropriately oohed and aahed. I don't know how many more years it will hold together, but we'll use it as long as we can.

Javier's Bed
I'm in Nicaragua visiting my sponsored "son" Javier and his friends. He is actually one of the lucky ones, because he has a house with a roof and a concrete floor. When I walked in and saw this bed, I knew I would not be able to sleep in my own soft and comfortable one if I did not do something. So he got a set of boxsprings and mattress. After I got home and ready to post this picture, I realized my previous December 3 photo was a picture of my bed. What a contrast, and how blessed am I, and are most of us. I hope that Javier will have comfort and rest on his new bed.

The Graduate
This is Wilmer, who just graduated from high school in Nicaragua. My friend has been sponsoring him for several years, and we are so proud of him. This is a huge accomplishment in this country, and I have never seen Wilmer smile so much. Felicidades, Wilmer!

Three Monkeys
Today we had a pool party at our hotel to celebrate many of our boys graduating from high school. These three asked me to take their picture and I told them they had to do the See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil thing. Even though they are in their late teens, they sometimes seem like little kids and the smallest things make them happy. We could all learn from Javier, Deybis, and Wilmer.

Purisima
On December 7 in Nicaragua, they celebrate "Purisima" which honors the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. As it was described to me, people set up altars on their porches, and children go from house to house in the neighborhood. They sing songs about Mary to the people, and in turn are given candy. It is similar to Trick or Treat in the United States. I actually had to leave today so I didn't get to experience it, but it sounds like fun.

Jeffrey George, MD--A Tragic Loss
Our friend Jeff George (on the left) and his 15 year old daughter Hannah were tragically killed last Wednesday in a fiery single car crash near Roanoke, Virginia. Jeff was a heart surgeon, who saved my dad's life by doing his bypass surgery six years ago. My husband Bill (on the right) and I went to junior high and high school with Jeff. He was in youth choir with us and was Bill's roommate on choir tour. He was our best man at our wedding. Bill and Jeff and other friends went on several hiking trips out west in the last few years (this pic is at Mt. Rainer). We are saddened and shocked by this loss. Hannah was an only child. Teresa, his wife, lost her whole family in an instant. Jeff was a kind, humble, loving man. I know that Jeff and Hannah are with God in heaven, but it is a small consolation to us.
Times like this remind us to hold our loved ones close, hug them, kiss them and tell them "I love you." Because life is truly very fragile.

Hope Springs Eternal
Today I stopped by the church to work on a few things, and there were several floral arrangements left over from the memorial service yesterday. This photo is in remembrance of Jeff and Hannah. Although it is vibrant and colorful, I am sure it pales in comparison to what they are experiencing now. And, Sarah, you are right--Hope springs eternal.

The Singing Christmas Tree
Our church has done a Singing Christmas Tree for about 35 years, give or take a few. It takes months of practice to memorize the music and the words, and it is difficult to stand quietly on a narrow platform with scratchy tinsel around your neck and hot lights shining into your face. But this year we are singing a collection of Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant music called "Agnus Dei." The worship experience is worth all the work, and I am glad to be a part of it. Little Fingers
I watched Eliza today, and when she woke from her nap, she just sat in my lap for about 15 minutes, quietly watching Noggin tv. She let me hold her little hand and seemed to like it. Unusual for a busy 16 month old. By the time I got this picture, she was having lunch, and her hands barely stopped moving long enough to get a clear shot.

Snow Angel
It's been a dark and dreary day here. I've had a little downtime in the middle of a very busy week. It's quiet in the house and I'm feeling kind of melancholy. Like this angel.

Michael Angelo
This is Michael Angelo and his family. He is the little one on the bottom right. They live in the Philippines, in a shack built over a cemetery. Michael Angelo was sold by his mom to a pimp for $60 who promised he would be a model and bring back a million dollars when he was 18. Thank God a social worker heard about this and got him back, explaining to the mother what would really happen (child sex slave or sold for body parts). My daughters found out about this family and found a way to help them. For around $1500 we purchased supplies to fix their house, buy a pedi-cab for the father, beds, clothes, water, food, and other necessities.
This is our Christmas gift to each other instead of things we don't need. It's really hard when you know there are so many more like Michael Angelo, but if we can help one family at a time, it is a start. If you want to know more about how you can help, send me a PM.

Small Town Saturday Night

Vintage Christmas
Doesn't everyone over the age of 40 remember this little plastic nativity set? We had one just like this when I was growing up. For some reason, my mom got rid of a lot of the older decorations. So I picked this one up on eBay a couple of years ago, and it brings back happy memories of Christmases long long ago, as the song goes.

Bowling
I'll start by saying I cheated on this photo; it was really taken on December 24. But too much happens that day to put into one picture. On Christmas Eve, my husband's family always goes bowling in the afternoon. It was originally done as a way to get the kids out of mom's hair while she got ready for the evening festivities. But it has endured for 46 years, and has become a tradition in itself. It is the only time all year that most of us bowl, but it's not Christmas without it.

Christmas Eve
It is hard to explain to anyone the chaos that is Christmas Eve in our family. My husband is one of 5 kids, who all have kids and grandkids. We all live in the same town, so we are always together for Christmas Eve. Add in some inlaws and boyfriends, and you have about 35 people for dinner. That's the easy part. It's the gift opening that really starts the craziness. We draw names, but there are 14 kids under 13 years old, so there is lots of shrieking and jumping around. Then you give the adults a couple glasses of wine, and bring out the karoake machine. I'm telling you, there isn't a better party in town!

How Does This Thing Work??
Christmas morning here was different this year. Bill and I woke up alone for the first time since our kids were born. Since both our kids live in town and have their own children, we decided it was time for them to start their own Christmas morning traditions. So they came over later, along with my parents, for breakfast. Still lots of fun. I've been really under the weather for a few days so the pictures were few. But the sun coming in the window spotlighted the boys in a quiet moment, and that's rare around here.
Merry Christmas to all my pBase friends.

The Photographer
Since I'm usually behind the camera, I'm rarely in a picture. I also pretty much hate every picture of myself, so there aren't too many pics of me lately. I was too lazy to set up the tripod and self-timer, so this will have to do for a self-portrait.

Party Like It's 2009
So we had a Karaoke party last night with our friends from church. Lots of yummy food, delicious drinks, bad singing, and good times. It also happened to be our 31st wedding anniversary, so it was fun to celebrate with friends.
I am very happy and relieved to say that this entry completes my PaD for 2008. Some days it was a real challenge to find the time to take pictures (and I will admit I cheated a little). There are several that I am not happy with because of either the lack of creativity or good technique, but there are also many shots I think are pretty darn good.
I definitely learned a lot about photography in the last year. And I know that I have much more to learn. My pBase friends have become very important to me, and I would love to meet some of you in real life.
I'm going to relax my "rules" about PaD in 2009, to relieve a little self-imposed stress. I know the best way to become a better photographer is to take more pictures, so hopefully I will keep it up.
Happy New Year to all of you on pBase! I look forward to another year of enjoying your wonderful photos.
