Notes to self: As always, I can see now how I would do things differently; if I'd known that slap was coming I would have caught it! Difficult dynamic range with light-skinned actors in white clothes and dark-skinned actors in dark clothes. If I exposed for the highlights and let the shadows fall where they may, I'd have lost half the cast; if I exposed for my subject and let the rest fall where it may, the highlights would have been unrecoverable (many were nevertheless). Theater was smaller than I remembered. Could have used a fast, wide-to-mid-range zoom and a camera with wider latitude. Lotto winnings or significantly increased book sales would definitely result in a D300 and 17-55 2.8 lens. Tried shooting jpegs with tungsten white balance, but this turned out to be a mistake, as the lighting was uneven and I had plenty of card space for shooting RAW. Plus no dancing or other fast movement, so I didn't need the jpeg burst rate and could have shot RAW and perhaps recovered the many blown highlights caused by bright lights on white clothes. Play was marvelous. Recommend that the cast download Jeff Buckley's live version of Strange Fruit.
