Good to see these pictures posted. I listened to all of these guys, growing up in the 50s and 60s in KC. All these years, I thought the old Night Beat Host was Leif Ogle. Turns out it was Lee Vogal, a name that just doesn't come across well over the air. Great shots and you have to love the fact that they all worked in suits and ties, back in the day. Today, DJs all dress like bums.

Sad to report that Allen Shaw died on Long Island, NY on Sept 14, 2014. He went on from WHB to pioneer the all news format for 1010 WINS in NYC. Continued reporting and anchoring radio until retirement. After WINS he worked with WCBS, CBS Radio, and CNBC. A great voice has been stilled, but his memory will always live in our hearts.

In about 1960 or so, I liked to listen to WHB night beat especially when Alan Shaw narrated it.

I use to listen to WHB Night Beat as a high school senior in Grandview, 1959-1960. I thought that I remember that the Night Beat talk show host.............. was killed in a bomb blast because he was discussing controversial subjects that were getting close to "powerful" people. Who was that host?...and what is the correct story. I remember that he had many friends in the KC Fire Department.

Very interesting, picture of Sam Babcock indeed looked like he looked at WPEO in Peoria 1958 -1959. He had the 10:30 to 11:30A and the 3:30 - 5:30 or sign off, daytime only signal, but was Peoria, Il's 1st top 40 outlet and had a great 3 year run until 24 hr station switched formats. Harry Harrison was on station at that time and he went straight to WMCA in New York in 1959. Sam was low key, would like an aircheck.

Gene Davis did work at WHB in the '50s. Last time I checked, his photo was posted on worldshappiestbroadcasters.com

Is there any record of a Eugene Davis working there? He was a radio announcer, and i believe he worked for this station in the late 50's. Thank you.

The picture you have for Sam Babcock is not him. I know because he is my dad. He worked at WHB a long time ago as a radio announcer. I can send you a correct picture of him if you would like. He died in 1971. Lisa Babcock Lassiter
