In April 2004, I spent the Easter holidays in Zakynthos (Zante) Island. Zakynthos, “the flower of the Levant” as the island has been called during Venice domination, is the birthplace of some of the most notable writers and poets in Greek history – Dionyssios Solomos, the poet of the Greek National Anthem among them – whose inspiration, as is said, came from the natural beauty of the island, offset by the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.

The weather during my stay there was fairly cloudy and very windy – unfortunately, this is reflected on sea photos. However, spring is the most representative season for the natural beauty of Zakynthos, while in summer this beauty is spoilt by the flood of tourists and the ill-favored tourism infrastructure.
