These pictures were taken on Sunday, May 11, 2003 in Nafplio, the capital of the prefecture of Argolis in the Peloponnese. Nafplio also used to be the first capital of Greece (1825-1834), after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire occupation. The first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Capodistrias, was killed here in 1828, while entering the church of St. Spyridon, and the deadly bullet still remains lodged in the church wall. Nafplio is a very picturesque town, features three castles and fortresses - one of which is built on an islet opposite the town - and its proximity to Athens makes it a popular destination for a weekend.
