In January 2007, Bulgaria became a full member of the European Union, but the Bulgarian society is far behind its new "counterparts" in terms of living standard. The violent invasion of capitalism after the collapse of an oppressed, yet well-structured society, produced a great deal of disparity and marginalised a lot of people.

I have visited two Bulgarian cities recently: Sofia and Sandanski; and this photo gallery depicts the struggle of Bulgarians to catch up with the "European Dream" - Balkan style. Still, the remains of the past are always present.
