Our home is in Gettysburg, PA. The stone house was built around 1795 and restored and expanded in 1994 or so. It is built of stone cut from the surrounding land -- five acres. The stone walls are up to about 2' thick. We have the deeds most of the way back, and the others are in county archives, so we've had fun researching the real history of the place. I'm particularly interested in knowing what was happening here during the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, since we are located less than a mile from the peak of Round Top.
The house sits on five acres of more-or-less flat, open field, which probably once held most of the stone that went into the house. For this reason, we decided to call the place Stone Meadow -- I've always thought it would be cool to have a place that actually had a name. The fact that Stone Meadow is also a rough translation of Steinauer is an added bonus. We have turned part of the garage into a photo studio, although this will probably be a continual work in progress. Although I probably won't be able to put sheep in our huge backyard, it would make a great place for a new border collie to run. Our Airedale loves it.
