I met Barbara's dad on Sunday -- discovered that he, along with George McGovern and thousands of other WWII vets who seldom talk about their experiences -- was a B-24 pilot over eastern Europe. While it's difficult, and surely unfair, to compare GIs' experiences, I have long felt that those bomber crews have to have had the most continuing, gut-wrenching, terrifying jobs in the war.
